A world where your urine can tell tales about what you've been drinking. That's precisely what scientists in Spain aimed to uncover. They explored how regular wine consumption affects human urine, using two methods: targeted and untargeted metabolomics. This wasn't your everyday questionnaire study; instead, they got creative with urine samples from a bunch of folks in La Rioja, ranging from ages 52 to 78.
The participants were split into three groups: heavy wine drinkers, moderate drinkers, and teetotalers. Researchers found some interesting compounds in the urine of regular wine drinkers that weren't present in the samples of non-drinkers. They also spotted a wide range of phenol metabolites, which are like the wine's by-products, particularly high in wine drinkers' urine.
What's unique about this study? They didn't play with the volunteers’ diets. The participants could live their regular lives, drink their usual wine, and eat their favorite food. This real-life approach helped uncover biomarkers directly linked to everyday wine consumption habits.
