DJ Daniel: A Young Hero's Inspiring Journey
USASun Mar 09 2025
DJ Daniel, a 13-year-old cancer survivor, has captured the hearts of many. His journey began with a shocking diagnosis at just six years old. His mother, Demitra Johnson, recalls the terrifying moment when DJ's body stiffened and he started foaming at the mouth. They rushed him to the hospital, where a CAT scan revealed Stage 3 brain cancer and a tumor the size of a lemon. Doctors gave him only five months to live. But DJ is a fighter. He's been through countless surgeries, each one changing his personality a little. His mother sees this as a positive, saying, "I feel like he's been born 13 times. He's so strong and has a heart of gold. "
DJ's love for police work started even before his diagnosis. Inspired by the Houston PD's efforts during Hurricane Harvey, he decided he wanted to be a police officer when he grew up. His father, Theodis Daniel, didn't want to wait for his son's dream to come true. He arranged for DJ to be sworn in as an honorary officer with the police department of Brookshire, Texas, in 2019. The then-6-year-old received a uniform and a 10-gallon hat. This was just the beginning. Two years later, a swarm of police officers showed up for DJ's ninth birthday to swear him in again. Suddenly, everyone wanted to have him in.
DJ's journey took a remarkable turn when he was invited to President Trump's congressional address. He was made an honorary US Secret Service agent by Director Sean Curran. This wasn't just any honor. DJ was given prime seats for the speech, sitting next to Elon Musk and having the first lady in front of him. He even got a boost from his dad, who was by his side throughout the event.
But not everyone was thrilled with DJ's moment in the spotlight. Rachel Maddow, an MSNBC anchor, declared Trump "disgusting" for calling out DJ and his cancer battle. Theodis Daniel, DJ's father, had strong words for Maddow. "She needs to shut her mouth if she has nothing nice to say, " he said. "This lady didn’t even serve time in the military. She does not need to put her bad energy on us. "
Despite the criticism, DJ's family remains positive. His aunt Jane marvels at his strength, saying, "Devarjaye has overcome the odds. It's all in who you are inside. I think God has given a tough battle to a good one. I believe that God is looking out for him and making sure that the right hands are touching him. "
DJ's story is a testament to his strength and resilience. He's faced more challenges than most people his age, but he continues to inspire those around him. His journey serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, one can find strength and purpose.
