DLSS 4: Revolutionizing Gaming on the RTX 5080
Tue Jan 07 2025
Nvidia's new GeForce RTX 5080 is here, and with it comes the revolutionary DLSS 4 technology. Over the holidays, I had the chance to test this new upscaling and frame generation tech in Cyberpunk 2077. The results were impressive, with DLSS 4 offering dramatic quality upgrades and boosting frame generation from one to even three interpolated frames. This means you can enjoy a better-looking Cyberpunk at frame rates well over 120fps.
The new vision transformer model used in DLSS 4 is a big step up from the older convolutional neural network model. It promises greater stability, reduced ghosting, and better detail. This technology is also backwards compatible, so older DLSS titles will benefit too. However, the increased complexity might impact performance, though this needs thorough testing.
DLSS frame generation has also seen improvements. The new RTX 50-series cards can generate up to three frames smoothly. In testing, I found that frame generation can boost frame rates by up to 913% compared to native resolution rendering. Latency-wise, the impact is minimal, adding only around 6. 4ms on average for maxed-out frame generation.
