Do social media fitness posts really help or hurt?
Evanston, Illinois, USATue May 05 2026
Social media feeds are full of images showing toned bodies and perfect gym routines. These posts claim to motivate people to eat better and stay active. But research suggests they might do the opposite for many users.
A review of over 26 studies found these "fitspiration" posts often lead to unhealthy comparisons. People start feeling worse about their own bodies after seeing them. Some may push themselves too hard in the gym or try extreme diets that aren’t sustainable.
The study included over 6, 000 young adults from seven different countries. Participants were shown fitspiration images and their reactions were tracked. Many reported feeling discouraged rather than inspired. The effects were strong enough that researchers called for more awareness about these posts' risks.
Experts point out that social media constantly bombards users with unrealistic standards. Unlike traditional media, these images appear daily in people’s lives. For young adults especially, constant exposure can shape unhealthy habits over time.
Not everyone agrees on how to handle this issue. Some argue these posts can still motivate if used carefully. Others believe the risks outweigh any potential benefits. The debate continues as social media remains a major influence on health behaviors.
