Don't Let Trade Wars Fuel a Military Showdown Over Taiwan

PacificWed Apr 16 2025
The U. S. has made defending Taiwan a big part of its Pacific plans. But its trade tactics might make things worse. The U. S. has been talking about a strong Pacific strategy. The defense of Taiwan is a key part of this plan. This isn't new. It's been U. S. policy since 1949. But things have changed. China has been building up its military. Its Navy has grown from 140 old ships to 234 new ones. China's leaders talk a lot about taking back Taiwan. President Xi Jinping even has a deadline for this. 2027. The U. S. needs help from allies like Japan and South Korea. But its tariffs make these countries doubt the U. S. The U. S. has put tariffs on these allies. But it has not put tariffs on Russia. This makes allies feel like the U. S. doesn't care about them. The U. S. cannot fight China alone. It needs allies. But its trade policies push allies away. The U. S. has invested a lot in fighter jets. But these jets can't reach Taiwan from U. S. bases. They need bases in Japan and the Philippines. But the U. S. tariffs make these countries hesitate to help. The U. S. also has bombers. But they are not enough. The U. S. needs a mix of forces. The U. S. cannot have one policy for trade and another for security. If it keeps its tariff war, it will face China alone. And it will lose. The U. S. should think about how its trade policies affect its security goals. It should work with allies, not push them away. It should remember that its actions have consequences. It should not let a trade war fuel a military showdown. The U. S. should be smart about its policies. It should be strategic. It should be thoughtful. It should be careful. It should be wise.
