Dreams and Dystopias: Where People Imagining Different Futures

Thu Feb 06 2025
Waking up to a world where things you imagined as a child are a part of reality! Scientists are now looking at how this power of imagination might influence the future. If sci-fi stories and films can make us laugh and think, maybe they can help us figure out what kind of future we want. These researchers looked at a bunch of stories, both happy futures and scary visions. So, they took a team of college students and gave them this task. Each participant had to think about the future and describe. It had rules, but also space for creativity. This proved to be a way to test if thinking about different futures can actually change how we act in the real world. They discovered that people think about the coming future. They found that our thoughts about nice futures and scary futures don't always balance out. Because of the future is different for everyone. But some themes come up again and again. Immigration. Politics. Technology. Over four years, the students had some revelation. Their thoughts on the future changed. Maybe they learned something about their own thoughts too. The study didn't just add to our understanding of how people think, it changed how we can study it. Imagine if dreaming about the future could help us make it? It does take a bit more than just dreaming. The study uncovered a silly insight. We all think differently. We all have different fear of the future. So it's likely that it’s important to be curious about how we’re thinking. It might help us understand how to change the future. like, really think about that. If we want a future where we can all live well, then we need to understand how we are thinking about the future. It’s like a fancy mirror we can use to plan. But like it's important to;. No matter what you decide to think, you have to be ready to start dreaming.
