Drone Wars: A Night of Cross-Border Strikes
Kyiv, UkraineMon May 26 2025
The night sky lit up with explosions as Ukraine and Russia exchanged drone and missile strikes. This happened on Sunday night into Monday morning, showing the ongoing tension between the two countries. Ukrainian air defenses were busy all night, shooting down or disabling most of the incoming threats.
Ukraine's air force reported that Russia launched a total of 364 "air attack vehicles" -- nine cruise missiles and 355 attack drones. Most of these were shot down or neutralized. The strikes hit five regions and caused falling debris in ten others. Russia, on the other hand, claimed to have downed 128 Ukrainian drones over 12 regions.
Ukraine did not just defend itself. It also launched attacks on Russian soil. Drones hit a facility in Yelabuga, producing Russia's Iranian-designed Shahed strike drones. Another drone struck a chemical enterprise in the Ivanovo region, which makes components for Russian weapons. These strikes show that Ukraine is not just defending but also trying to disrupt Russia's war efforts.
Cross-border strikes have become a regular feature of this war. They have been happening nearly every night for over three years. The size of these attacks has been increasing recently. For instance, on Saturday night into Sunday, Russia launched its largest aerial attack of the war, killing at least 18 people.
The recent attacks prompted President Donald Trump to criticize both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump, who has a history with Putin, expressed his disapproval of Putin's actions. He suggested that Putin's behavior has changed, making him "crazy. "Trump also criticized Zelenskyy, blaming him for the lack of progress in peace talks. He accused Zelenskyy of causing problems with his statements.
Ukrainian leaders have been pushing for tougher sanctions on Russia and a 30-day ceasefire to start peace talks. They see Russia's continued strikes as a sign that Moscow is not serious about peace. Russia, however, has refused the ceasefire proposal. Following the latest strikes, Andriy Yermak, the head of Zelenskyy's presidential office, urged Russia to speed up the ceasefire process. He suggested that sanctions and weapons could push Moscow to act faster.
The ongoing drone wars highlight the complexity of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. They show the determination of both sides to fight and the challenges in achieving peace. The involvement of external actors, like Trump, adds another layer to the conflict. His criticism of both leaders reflects the difficulties in mediating a resolution.
