Dustin Johnson is staying put with LIV Golf, and he couldn’t care less about what others think. He’s happy with his choice, even as the league faces some serious challenges. Johnson signed a new deal and made it clear he’s not going anywhere. He likes the lighter schedule and the big paychecks, so why would he?
LIV Golf isn’t doing so well lately. Viewership is down, and the league is losing a lot of money. Even big names like Jon Rahm couldn’t bring in the crowds. But Johnson isn’t worried. He’s making more money than ever and spending more time with his family. For him, it’s a win-win.
Money has been a big factor. Johnson reportedly got a huge signing bonus and has earned millions more since joining LIV. By 2029, his total earnings could hit $300 million. That’s a lot of cash, and it’s easy to see why he’s not complaining.
But not everyone agrees with his choice. Brooks Koepka turned down a massive contract to stay with the PGA Tour. He’d even pay a huge fine to play there again. The PGA Tour is also offering a way back for other golfers who won majors between 2022 and 2025. Johnson, though, can’t use that option since his last major win was in 2020.
Johnson still claims he wants to be the best, but LIV’s struggles make that hard to believe. Without OWGR points, LIV players aren’t getting the recognition they might deserve. Johnson’s last win was in 2024, and his world ranking has dropped to 639th. He argues that OWGR is unfair, but without points, his claim to be the best rings hollow.
His path to major championships is also getting tougher. He still has exemptions for Augusta and the US Open, but the PGA Championship and Open Championship now require invitations. So, while Johnson says he has the drive to compete, his chances are slipping away.
