Dusty May: From Small‑Town Roots to Michigan’s Basketball Leader
Indiana, USAFri Mar 20 2026
Dusty May grew up in a quiet Indiana town called Solsberry, where life was simple and hard work mattered. After high school he played basketball at a local college before becoming a student manager for the famous coach Bob Knight. That early experience taught him that success comes from careful planning and a strong work ethic.
May’s family history shows deep ties to the Midwest. His great‑grandfather moved from Ohio to work in coal mines, a job his father also held for nearly three decades. While his mother worked in human resources, the family’s everyday struggles helped shape May’s practical approach to coaching.
He is an American citizen and, according to his public activities, follows Christian faith. May has spoken at events for Coaches for Christ, sharing how sports can support spiritual growth.
After working in several universities across the country—California, Michigan, Kentucky, Alabama, Louisiana, and Florida—May took over as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines in 2024. He turned a record‑low season into a championship run, showing how perseverance and smart recruiting can revive a team.
