Jake Elliott, the Eagles' kicker, has been a bit of a rollercoaster this season. He started off strong, nailing his first six kicks, including some long ones from beyond 50 yards. But lately, he's been struggling, with only 11 out of 18 kicks going in. His accuracy rate is now at a career low of 70. 8%, and this is the second year in a row he's been below 80%.
In a recent game against the Washington Commanders, Elliott missed two kicks, one from 43 yards and another from 52 yards. The 52-yarder was a second chance after a penalty gave him another shot. Coach Nick Sirianni decided not to send Elliott out for a 55-yard attempt later in the game, opting for a different strategy instead.
Sirianni has been vocal about his confidence in Elliott. He believes in the kicker's process and mental toughness. "I have a ton of confidence in Jake, " Sirianni said. "He'll rebound from whatever setbacks he has had. " The coach also emphasized the importance of support and appreciation, especially during tough times.
Elliott himself understands the pressure. "It's a production-based business, " he said. "You see it all the time. So that's out of my hands. That's out of my control. All I can do is kind of put my head down and keep pushing. "
Despite the recent struggles, Elliott has had some impressive moments. Last season, he went 10 for 11 in the playoffs, including a crucial 50-yarder in the Super Bowl. Sirianni highlighted Elliott's resilience, mentioning his ability to rise from tough situations.
The Eagles aren't looking for a new kicker, which is a vote of confidence for Elliott. But the question remains: can he bounce back and regain his form? Only time will tell.
