It's a rare and fascinating phenomenon when an asteroid gets captured by Earth's gravity, becoming a mini-moon for a short period. Meet 2024 PT5, a newly discovered asteroid that's about to make its temporary appearance in our planet's orbit. This space rock, estimated to be around 37 feet (11 meters) in diameter, will be our mini-moon from September 29 to November 25, before returning to its normal orbit around the sun.
Astronomers from the Complutense University of Madrid first spotted the asteroid on August 7 using the NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in South Africa. Lead study author Carlos de la Fuente Marcos explained that the asteroid's size could be anywhere between 16 and 138 feet (5 and 42 meters) in diameter, making it potentially larger than the Chelyabinsk asteroid that exploded over Russia in 2013.
As a mini-moon, 2024 PT5 won't collide with Earth or pose any danger to our planet. Instead, it will orbit about 2. 6 million miles (4. 2 million kilometers) away, roughly 10 times the distance between Earth and the moon. This temporary visitor will offer astronomers a unique opportunity to study its trajectory and size.
Mini-moons come in two flavors: long episodes, where asteroids complete one or more revolutions around Earth, and short episodes, like 2024 PT5, which will only orbit our planet for a few months. Short-timers like this asteroid are relatively rare, occurring several times per decade, while long mini-moon events are much less common, happening every 10 or 20 years.
The making of a mini-moon is a delicate process, requiring the asteroid to approach Earth at just the right speed and direction to be captured by our planet's gravity. As Robert Jedicke, a specialist emeritus on solar system bodies at the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy, explained, "It's not easy for asteroids to become mini-moons because they have to be traveling at just the right speed and direction to be captured by Earth's gravity. "
Asteroid 2024 PT5 is expected to make a close flyby of Earth on January 9, 2025, before leaving our neighborhood and returning in 2055. When it does, astronomers expect it to become Earth's mini-moon again for a few days in November 2055 and again for a few weeks in early 2084.
