Easier Farm Trade Between China and the US?

Beijing, ChinaSun May 17 2026
China and the US have agreed to make it cheaper and simpler to buy and sell farm products between the two countries. This news came after leaders from both nations met in Beijing recently. The goal is to lower taxes on certain goods and solve old problems that have slowed down trade for years. Even though the plans are still in the early stages, experts think these changes could help bring back some of the trade that disappeared when taxes went up last year. Back then, farm trade between the two countries dropped by more than half, falling to just $8. 4 billion in 2025. Now, both sides want to rebuild trust by making it easier for businesses to buy and sell again.
A big part of the deal involves cutting taxes on farm goods like soybeans. Right now, extra fees make it too expensive for most Chinese buyers to import American farm products. If those taxes get lowered, private companies might start buying again, instead of relying only on government traders. Some traders have already started buying small amounts of soybeans, wheat, and sorghum from the US, showing a small step forward. China has also taken quick action to approve more US beef factories for importing meat. Last year, many of these factories lost their approval, which blocked most beef imports. Now, over 500 factories have gotten a fresh five-year approval, which could help US farmers sell more meat to China in the future. No one has shared exact numbers yet, but US officials hope China will buy much more American farm products over the next few years. Until the details are clear, though, it’s hard to know if these plans will really help farmers or just stay on paper.
