Easter Truce: A Short Break in Ukraine's War
Donetsk region, UkraineSun Apr 20 2025
The recent conflict in Ukraine saw a brief pause in fighting, announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin. This unexpected move came just after Russia made significant gains in the southern region of Kursk. Putin declared a 30-hour ceasefire starting from 6 p. m. Moscow time on Saturday until midnight Sunday.
Ukraine was quick to express doubt. President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Putin of using the truce for publicity rather than genuine peace efforts. Zelensky's skepticism was fueled by the fact that Russia had previously rejected a U. S. -proposed 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine had agreed to. Despite the announced truce, fighting did not stop completely. Ukrainian leaders reported a slowdown overnight but noted an increase in Russian attacks as Sunday progressed. The Russian Ministry of Defense, however, accused Ukraine of violating the ceasefire.
The Ukrainian military suspected that Russia was using the pause to strategize. For instance, they observed Russian troops clearing obstacles to facilitate the movement of heavy military equipment. This raised questions about Russia's true intentions behind the ceasefire. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is ready for a genuine and extended ceasefire but has not received a positive response from Russia. He also mentioned that Ukraine would respond symmetrically to any provocations from Russia. The Ukrainian military has been instructed to limit fire unless provoked.
Russia's defense ministry claimed that its forces had strictly observed the ceasefire and accused Ukraine of violating it over 1, 000 times. They reported Ukrainian units shooting at Russian positions and conducting drone attacks, resulting in civilian casualties and damage. Despite these accusations, Ukraine's president reiterated the call for a 30-day ceasefire, aligning with a previous U. S. -led proposal that Russia had rejected. The Ukrainian military has stated that they will comply with orders to limit fire but will respond if attacked first. This situation highlights the complex and tense nature of the conflict, with both sides accusing the other of violations and strategic maneuvering.
