People who have beaten cancer might live longer if they eat like those in the Mediterranean. This diet is full of fruits, veggies, whole grains, legumes, fish, and olive oil. A recent study showed that those who stick to this diet have a lower chance of dying from any cause. This includes cancer, heart problems, and brain diseases.
The study looked at 779 adults in Italy who had cancer. They were followed for about 14 years. Researchers used a tool called Life's Simple 7 to check their heart health. This tool looks at things like smoking, exercise, diet, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar.
Those who ate the most like people in the Mediterranean had a 15-20% lower risk of dying. Out of 269 deaths, 141 were from cancer, 67 from heart disease, and 54 from other issues.
Heart health is also key. People with the best heart health had a 38% lower risk of dying. Each point increase in the Life's Simple 7 score meant a 10% lower risk of dying from cancer.
The study found that inflammation, heart rate, and vitamin D levels played big roles. Inflammation explained 20% of the link between heart health and survival. Heart rate explained 30%, and vitamin D levels also mattered a lot.
This diet has been shown to help before. Past studies found that it can lower the risk of dying from heart disease and cancer. It can also help people live longer.
For those who have had cancer, the message is clear. Eating well, staying active, and avoiding smoking can help them live longer. This diet is a simple, natural way to boost health.
