Eating Smart: How People Want the Government to Step In
USA, United StatesWed Jun 03 2026
A recent online survey of 2, 000 U. S. adults revealed that more than half have heard about ultra‑processed foods (UPFs), yet only a third feel they truly grasp what these products are. The study, conducted through a partnership with YouGov, aimed to see how confident people are in explaining UPFs and whether they believe the government should intervene.
Results show that while most respondents agree UPFs can hurt physical health, fewer connect them to mental well‑being. Still, the idea that companies making these foods should be held accountable gained traction across political lines.
When asked about specific policies, people from all parties—Democrats, Independents and Republicans alike—backed a range of measures. These include stricter labeling rules, limits on marketing to kids and higher taxes on sugary snacks. The data suggest a shared belief that government action could help curb the consumption of these foods.
The survey also highlighted gaps in knowledge. Even though many have heard of UPFs, only a small fraction can confidently describe their ingredients or health effects. This uncertainty points to a need for clearer public education about what qualifies as an ultra‑processed food.
Overall, the study shows a strong, bipartisan appetite for policy changes aimed at reducing UPF harms. It signals that lawmakers could find broad support if they pursue regulations targeting both products and the companies behind them.
