Eau Claire’s New Restaurant Dream Seeks State Cash Boost
Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USASat May 09 2026
The city of Eau Claire wants to help a new steakhouse called Condesa get started in a long‑empty spot on Haymarket Landing. The 7, 700‑square‑foot building was bought by Foxconn in 2018 but never opened. Now, JP Nunez plans to turn it into a Latin‑inspired eatery that can seat 200 guests.
Nunez says the restaurant will create about thirty to forty jobs and pull in roughly two million dollars a year. The idea is still fresh, so the city will ask for a $250, 000 grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation. The money would cover extra construction costs that have risen since the original plan was drawn up.
The grant program, called Community Development Investment, helps businesses bridge funding gaps that keep projects stalled. If the city council approves, Eau Claire could use the grant to support Condesa’s launch next year.
Council members will decide at Tuesday’s meeting whether the city can apply for this grant on behalf of the new restaurant. The decision could set a precedent for future revitalization projects in downtown Eau Claire.
The proposal shows how local governments can partner with private developers to spark economic growth in vacant commercial spaces. It also highlights the importance of public funding in overcoming financial hurdles that often delay new businesses.
