Ebola Alert in Congo and Uganda Sparks Global Response

Democratic Republic of Congo, GomaSun May 17 2026
The World Health Organization has named the latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a public health emergency that matters worldwide. Around 80 people may have died, and nine cases were confirmed in laboratories. The virus is the Bundibugyo strain, which does not have a vaccine or treatment that works well. Three provinces in the DRC’s Ituri region are most affected: Bunia, Rwampara and Mongbwalu. An extra case appeared in Goma after a report from rebels. The outbreak is the 17th in Congo, but it could be larger than the numbers show. Many early samples tested positive, and more people are being reported as sick. Because Bundibugyo is different from the usual Zaire strain, experts say it is “extraordinary. ”
Uganda’s capital, Kampala, has two confirmed cases and one death. Both people had come from Congo. In Kinshasa, the DRC’s capital, a person who returned from Ituri tested positive. The WHO urges that anyone exposed should stay home for 21 days and avoid travel. Countries sharing borders with Congo must act quickly. They should set up emergency plans, screen travelers and keep roads monitored. The WHO warns that closing borders could push people to cross illegally, which is harder to control. Experts note that Congo’s forests are a natural home for the virus. The disease spreads when people touch bodily fluids or contaminated items from sick or dead individuals. Despite the danger, the agency says travel and trade should not be stopped out of fear.
