Ebola Cases Rise Fast in Eastern Congo
Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa,Mon Jun 15 2026
The battle against Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo just got tougher. Confirmed cases jumped by 72 in a single day, pushing the total to 782. That’s one of the steepest increases since the outbreak began. Behind these numbers lie 181 lives lost, a stark reminder of how hard this virus hits.
What stands out isn’t just the speed of the spread but where it’s happening. The outbreak had stayed within three provinces—Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu—but new cases popped up in two areas for the first time. Nia-Nia in Ituri and Mabalako in North Kivu now join the growing list of affected zones. With cases confirmed in 20 of Ituri’s 36 health zones and 10 of North Kivu’s 34, the situation feels less contained than before.
The pattern is worrying. More zones reporting cases means the virus is slipping through cracks in disease tracking. Health workers face bigger challenges as communities grow and travel between areas. The fact that South Kivu has only a single reported case so far might look like good news—but it’s too early to call this an improvement.
