Echo Users: Get Ready for Big Privacy Changes
Sat Mar 15 2025
Amazon is shaking up how Echo devices handle your voice data. Starting March 28, all conversations with Alexa will be sent to Amazon's cloud. This means no more local processing of voice requests on Echo devices. In other words, everything you say to Alexa will be sent to Amazon's servers for processing.
Amazon is pushing this change to support new AI features in Alexa+. These features need the power of Amazon's cloud to work. One of the big new features is Alexa Voice ID, which can recognize different voices. To make this work, Amazon is removing an option that lets users keep their voice data local.
This change affects everyone with an Echo device, even if they don't want the new AI features. It's a big shift in how Amazon handles user privacy. Many people might feel uncomfortable with the idea of a company listening to their personal conversations at home. This is especially true given Amazon's past mistakes with Alexa voice recordings.
Amazon has had issues with how it handles voice data in the past. In 2023, they had to pay a $25 million fine. The reason? They kept recordings of children's interactions with Alexa forever. It took until 2019 for Amazon to properly inform adults that they were keeping Alexa recordings unless asked not to.
Amazon's move to send all voice data to the cloud raises some serious questions. How will Amazon use this data? Will it be kept secure? These are important questions that users should be thinking about. It's crucial for users to understand the privacy trade-offs they're making when they use these devices.
