Ecuador Opposition Leader Arrested Over Campaign Finance Claims
The head of the Citizens Revolution party announced on social media that Luisa Gonzalez had been arrested, labeling the action a politically motivated move. She demanded the politician’s immediate release, saying the government was subjecting her to persecution and torture.
Officials say the probe focuses on alleged irregularities in campaign financing and spending during the 2023 election. They point out that seven people are under investigation for mismatched contributions and unclear origins of the funds. So far three individuals have been taken into custody and will face money‑laundering charges, though their identities have not been released.
Former president Rafael Correa, a backer of Gonzalez, called the case a brutal act of persecution unrelated to any legal breach. He argued that the accusations ignore the actual rules and instead reflect a hostile agenda. Gonzalez lost both the 2023 and 2025 presidential contests to Daniel Noboa and has claimed fraud in the most recent loss. She also tried to enter local elections scheduled for November 29 but was barred from registering her candidacy due to party registration restrictions.
The episode underscores growing friction between the ruling party and opposition leaders. Observers note that the crackdown may affect future political engagement and transparency in campaign finance. Critics warn that such moves could limit dissent and raise concerns about democratic processes.
