Eggs Recalled: Salmonella Outbreak Affects Nine States
USA, Annandale, Virginia (Minnesota)Mon Oct 07 2024
Have you heard about the recent egg recall? The FDA isn't messing around this time. They've issued a Class I recall, which means these eggs could make people seriously sick or even die. It's all because of a nasty strain of Salmonella that doesn't play nice with antibiotics.
The affected egg brands are Milo's Poultry Farms (chicken eggs), Tony's Fresh Market (chicken eggs), and Happy Quackers Farm (duck eggs). So far, 65 people have gotten sick, and 24 of them had to go to the hospital. The good news is no one has died yet.
This Salmonella strain is a real pain because it's antibiotic-resistant. That means if you get really sick, doctors might need stronger medicine to treat you. The FDA found this nasty bacteria in the packing facility and where the hens lay their eggs.
The outbreak has hit nine states: California, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin. If you live in one of these states and have any of these eggs, it's best to toss them or return them to the store.
Salmonella can make you feel pretty bad with symptoms like diarrhea that won't go away after three days, a high fever, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and dehydration. These symptoms can last up to a week. Kids under 5, older folks, or people with weak immune systems might get it worse.
If you've handled these eggs, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly and clean any surfaces they touched using hot soapy water or run them through the dishwasher. If you have questions, give your state's health department a call.
