The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has finally unveiled its long-awaited rules for electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (eVTOLs). These aircraft, often dubbed air taxis, are set to revolutionize air travel. The FAA believes they'll be the first new aircraft category since helicopters debuted in 1940. These rules cover everything from pilot training to safe altitude and visibility requirements.
FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker sees this as a historic moment. "These powered-lift aircraft are opening a new chapter in aviation, " he said. These eVTOLs take off and land vertically like helicopters but switch to fixed-wing flight for longer distances. Companies like Joby Aviation and Archer are eager to launch commercial services.
Initially, the FAA planned to certify these under normal aircraft rules. However, in 2022, they decided on a new category for special class vehicles. This led to years of work on new rules for training, operations, and maintenance. Last year's draft rules faced criticism for being too strict. The FAA hopes the final rules address these concerns while keeping safety a priority.
Congress has given the FAA more power to regulate these new aircraft types. The final rules seem to address industry criticisms. A new training rule for pilots was necessary because existing regulations didn't cover vertical takeoff and landings. The rule also sets up a framework for certifying the first batch of powered-lift instructors and pilots.
The FAA is making significant changes to existing regulations and establishing new requirements. They're applying helicopter rules to some flight phases and adopting a performance-based approach for others. Pilots can now train with a single set of controls, unlike legacy rules.
Currently, no powered-lift aircraft are in commercial operation in the US. Companies like Archer and Joby are close, but obtaining FAA certificates takes time. Joby welcomed the FAA's final rules, noting they came ahead of schedule.
