Ford is rolling out an over-the-air software update for its electric vehicles, the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning. This update brings a new feature to Android Auto users, allowing Google Maps to show real-time battery status. Once the update is installed, Ford's EVs will share their battery state with Google Maps when connected via Android Auto. This means Google Maps can estimate the battery level upon arrival at a destination and suggest charging stops along the route with estimated charging times.
Previously, Apple users could enjoy this feature with Apple Maps and CarPlay. However, this new update is a game-changer for Android users. Google Maps will now offer some unique features that Apple Maps doesn't. For instance, if you set a fast charging station as a destination, Google Maps will instruct the Ford EV to precondition the battery for faster charging. Moreover, it will show available Tesla Supercharger locations along the route.
Google has been playing catch-up with Apple in terms of integrating phone features with car infotainment systems. Many car manufacturers have started using Android Automotive for their infotainment systems, which is different from Android Auto. This update is a step in the right direction for Android users, giving them more control and convenience while on the road.
