The Department of Justice (DoJ) has raised a red flag about Elon Musk's plan to give away $1 million daily to registered voters who sign a petition. The billionaire tech mogul and Tesla CEO, a big supporter of Donald Trump's presidential bid, launched this giveaway to promote his political action committee, America Pac. The DoJ warned that these prizes might violate federal laws that prohibit paying individuals to register to vote.
Musk’s giveaway lasted until the election day on November 5, with winners chosen from swing states. He handed out the first cheques at rallies in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. The DoJ's concern centers on whether these cash prizes could be seen as inducements to vote, which is against federal law.
America Pac and Musk's team have not commented on the DoJ's letter, which was first reported by CNN. Musk is one of Trump’s most notable backers, donating heavily to America Pac and participating actively in campaign events. The Pac has shared details on X (owned by Musk) about the prize selection process and additional referral incentives.
