Elon Musk, a close ally of Donald Trump, has raised some eyebrows. A former US military chief, Lt Gen Russel Honoré, recently voiced concerns about Musk's strong ties with China. He's worried that these ties could put the country's security at risk. Musk has plenty of business interests in China. Think along the lines of loans worth $1. 4 billion from state banks and a Tesla factory that follows Beijing's strict information-sharing rules. Honoré thinks this might not be great for national security. Honoré isn't alone in his worries. The air force, the defense department's inspector general, and the undersecretary of defense for intelligence are all looking into Musk's meetings with foreign leaders. He's supposed to disclose these meetings as part of his security clearance, but it seems he hadn't been doing that.
What about Musk's stance on Taiwan? He once suggested that it become a "special administrative zone" of China. This didn't sit well with everyone, especially since Beijing praised his comments. And let's not forget the reports of Musk talking to Vladimir Putin regularly since late 2022. Two Democratic senators wanted an investigation into SpaceX's government contracts after hearing about these chats. Honoré thinks that if these investigations show close links to China and Russia, the government should consider revoking Musk's security clearance. After all, the last thing anyone wants is for China to gain easy access to classified information.
