Elon Musk's Mail-In Voting Conundrum: A Tale of Two Elections

Elon Musk is known for his strong opinions, but his recent voting history reveals a stark contrast between his words and actions. Despite calling mail-in voting "insane" and allegedly claiming it encourages election fraud, Musk himself has voted by mail twice in the past. In 2016 and again in 2018, Musk cast his ballots by mail in California, where he was registered to vote at the time.
But this isn't the only issue. Musk's voting record shows a sparse history of voting in California, with only two instances of casting a ballot in the nearly two decades he was eligible to vote. He skipped numerous elections, including presidential races, primary elections, and local elections. California has an open primary system, allowing all registered voters to participate.
What if Musk's assumption about mail-in voting being "insane" is wrong? What might he have missed in his critique? Did he consider the security measures in place to ensure the integrity of the system? For example, California checks ID numbers against what's on file and examines signatures when people vote by mail. The state also captures IP addresses used for online voter registrations and has a penalty of perjury for voters who attest to their eligibility.
Musk's criticism of mail-in voting is not unique. He's not the only one to both criticize it and use it. Trump has done the same, voting by mail in 2020 in Florida. Musk has even endorsed Trump's bid to return to the White House. It's worth asking whether Musk's views on voting are driven by his own convenience or a genuine concern for election integrity.
But what about the security measures in place to prevent fraud? Studies have repeatedly shown that there's no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the U. S. , and examples of fraud involving mail-in or absentee ballots are exceedingly rare. When fraud does occur, prosecutors have successfully brought cases against perpetrators.
Musk's own Super PAC, America PAC, has been encouraging swing state voters to absentee vote with ballots that can be submitted by mail. A mailer from America PAC was distributed in Wisconsin, directing voters to apply for their absentee ballot. In Wisconsin, voters can cast absentee ballots by mailing them in, by bringing them to a county clerk's office, or by bringing them to a polling place.
After moving to Texas, Musk voted by absentee ballot in 2020, but it's unclear whether he mailed the ballot. Musk is now registered to vote in Brownsville, Texas, where his company SpaceX has operations, although he reportedly lived in Austin as of December.
Musk's voting history raises important questions about his values and priorities. Does he prioritize convenience over principle? Is his criticism of mail-in voting driven by a genuine concern for election integrity or a desire to score political points?
