Elon Musk's Media Maneuvers: Avoiding the Hard Questions
Mon Apr 21 2025
Elon Musk, the tech billionaire, has been steering clear of tough interviews since he took over Twitter, now known as X. He has been more selective about who he talks to, often choosing platforms and hosts that won't push him too hard. Musk has been appearing on Fox News and chatting with hosts who are more likely to praise him than ask tough questions.
Some of Musk's recent interviews have been with people who share his views. He has talked to Joe Rogan and Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who both had kind words for Musk. He has also been to events with right-wing political groups in other countries, like Italy's Lega party. These appearances have been more about supporting his causes than facing tough questions.
Musk has not had a truly challenging interview in over a year. The last time he faced difficult questions was with Don Lemon in March 2024. Lemon asked about X's shift to the right, conspiracy theories, and Musk's views on diversity and transgender people. Musk did not appreciate Lemon's questioning. Lemon was supposed to start a new show on X with this interview, but the deal fell through shortly after.
Musk has a complicated history with the media. He has said he has a "love/hate" relationship with them, but he leans more towards "hate. "He has been known to cut communication departments at his companies, making it hard for reporters to get in touch. Stories about Musk often note that he or his representatives do not respond to requests for comment.
Musk's media strategy seems to be about control. He chooses where and when to talk, and with whom. This way, he can avoid questions he doesn't want to answer. It's a smart move, but it also raises questions about transparency and accountability. If Musk wants to be a leader in tech and politics, he needs to be open to tough questions. After all, that's how leaders grow and improve.
