Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has an interesting idea for how he'd approach regulating driverless cars if he were to work for former President Donald Trump. He wants to push for a national approach to rules for these vehicles. Currently, 19 states have their own laws about driverless cars, but the federal government hasn't done much about this.
Musk was talking about this on an earnings call. He mentioned a commission called the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, which he and Trump had discussed creating. This commission would look at the federal government's finances and performance and suggest changes.
Musk believes that Tesla will get approval to start rideshare services and launch fully autonomous cars in California, Texas, and other states by 2025. He's not too worried about California's approval process, even though it can take a while.
Working on a commission like DOGE could give Musk a lot of influence over government agencies that regulate his companies. This might help him avoid conflicts with agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency.
Musk has shown his support for Trump in various ways, including donating money to a pro-Trump group and talking with people in Pennsylvania, a key state for elections. However, the Justice Department recently warned him that his plan to give away money to people who signed a petition might break federal laws.
