Elyria narrows Oberlin Road to ease traffic

Elyria, Ohio, USA,Wed Apr 08 2026
Elyria is reshaping Oberlin Road to cut congestion. The city council just approved turning four lanes into three, adding bike paths and a left-turn lane. Most of the $812, 000 cost comes from outside grants, so local taxes won’t cover it. Engineers say fewer lanes will actually move cars faster by making turns safer and reducing sudden stops. Traffic lights at Middle Avenue and the city limits will disappear. Near West Avenue and South Maple, stop signs will appear for cross streets while Oberlin keeps flowing. The changes won’t spread past Elyria’s borders except for new signs warning drivers about the new layout. Lorain County is also planning a roundabout nearby, which could mean more tweaks ahead.
Councilwoman Donna Mitchell worries the simpler intersection of West Avenue and South Maple could invite crashes. City engineers insist traffic counts show it’s safe and point to better visibility once the striping is done. Safety leaders say residents who once objected now feel better after seeing the plans. Still, drivers will need time to adjust once the paint is dry. The project sits inside Elyria’s long-range budget. Critics argue that removing a traffic signal without more controls feels risky. Supporters say studies back the move. Either way, the road will look different by 2026.
