EU Faces Return of High Tariffs If July 4 Deadline Missed
USASat May 09 2026
The United States has warned that it will re‑impose steep tariffs on goods from the European Union if Brussels does not finish its commitments by July 4. The message came from Trade Representative Jamieson Greer during a TV interview.
Greer said he had spoken with officials from several European countries while visiting Europe this week. He believes the EU is focused on making the necessary changes, but says Washington will monitor closely.
President Donald Trump had already set July 4 as the final date for the EU to keep its side of a trade deal reached in Scotland last year. If the deadline is missed, Trump plans to raise tariffs on EU cars and trucks significantly.
The U. S. has kept its side of the bargain by adjusting tariffs on EU products, while the EU has yet to lower industrial duties or remove other trade barriers. Greer noted that no part of the EU’s obligations has been fully implemented after seven or eight months.
The two sides still disagree over other issues, such as the war in the Middle East and NATO’s involvement. Trump has also mentioned a desire to acquire Greenland, adding complexity to the negotiations.
If the EU fails to comply, Washington will wait until the trade deal is fully enforced before moving forward. The U. S. remains prepared to enforce its tariff structure if necessary.
