Eucalyptus Oil Shows Promise Against Dengue
Dengue is a common virus that spreads worldwide. The WHO reports it infects nearly 400 million people each year. About one percent of those cases become severe.
Existing vaccines have shown limited success, so experts are looking for other ways to stop the disease. Finding new antiviral medicines is now a top priority for health researchers.
A team studied fourteen active ingredients taken from eucalyptus essential oil. They matched these compounds with seventy shared targets between the oil and the dengue virus. Network analysis using KEGG and Metascape highlighted that the strongest links involve DENV‑2 proteins. Computer docking showed that globulol and eucalyptol bind tightly to the receptors 1oke and 1tg8f, with energies of -8.3 and -7.6. The safety and drug‑likeness tests confirmed that these metabolites are safe for further development.
These findings suggest eucalyptus oil may help treat dengue fever. However, real‑world testing in animal models is still required to prove its effectiveness.
