France is teaming up with other European countries to figure out what to do if the United States tries to take over Greenland. This comes after U. S. President Donald Trump has been talking about wanting to control the Arctic island. Taking Greenland from Denmark, a long-time ally, could cause big problems for NATO and make the divide between the U. S. and Europe even wider.
France's foreign minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, said they will talk about this issue with Germany and Poland. He made it clear that France wants to act, but only with the support of its European partners. Other big countries in Europe, along with Canada, have also shown support for Greenland, saying it belongs to its people.
Trump has been talking about taking over Greenland since 2019. He believes it's important for the U. S. military and thinks Denmark hasn't done enough to protect it. The White House said Trump is looking at different ways to get control of Greenland, even though many people in Europe are against it.
Barrot mentioned that a top U. S. official, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, told him that a military operation to take Greenland is not being considered. This news comes after the U. S. military recently took action in Venezuela, which made people worry that Greenland could be next. Greenland, with a population of just 57, 000, does not want to be part of the United States.
Greenland is the world's largest island but is not an independent member of NATO. It is covered by Denmark's membership. The island is important because of its location between Europe and North America, making it a key site for the U. S. ballistic missile defense system. Its mineral wealth is also valuable to the U. S. as it looks to reduce its reliance on China.
