Vance expressed concerns about the state of democracy in Europe, suggesting that free speech is under threat. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre took issue with Vance's remarks on immigration, stating that European countries are very much focused on controlling their borders. He pointed out that the influx of Ukrainian refugees, due to the ongoing war, has been a significant factor in recent years. Støre argued that Vance's focus on the presumed loss of freedom of speech in Europe overlooks the more pressing issues of conflict and migration. The debate highlights the differing perspectives on democracy and free speech between the U. S. and European countries.
