Everton Eyes Versatile Walker-Peters for Backline Boost
Liverpool, England, United KingdomThu Jan 23 2025
Everton might be eyeing a move for Southampton's Kyle Walker-Peters to bolster their full-back options, according to recent reports. David Moyes, now at the helm of Everton, is looking to strengthen his squad. The team's current right-back, Ashley Young, is 39 and could benefit from some backup. Vitalii Mykolenko, on the other hand, has been inconsistent this season. During their recent 3-2 win against Tottenham, Moyes even had to use center-back Jake O'Brien as a makeshift right-back.
This victory was crucial for Everton, marking Moyes's first Premier League win since returning to the club. It also pushed them to 20 points, four points clear of the relegation zone with a game in hand. New owners, The Friedkin Group, are likely to be cautious with spending to ensure financial compliance. However, they are keen to support Moyes, possibly through cut-price deals or loan acquisitions.
Dean Jones, in a recent podcast, suggested that Walker-Peters could be a smart pick for Everton. Walker-Peters, a 27-year-old with an expiring contract, is reportedly available for just £5 million. Southampton isn't optimistic about retaining him. Walker-Peters has been a key player at St Mary's since joining from Tottenham in 2020. He's played at both right and left-back, and even occasionally in central defense, making 20 league appearances this season with two assists.
Everton's transfer efforts have seen some hiccups. Their bid for Olympique Lyonnais winger Ernest Nuamah stalled, and discussions for Chelsea's Ben Chilwell and Leicester's Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall on loan have faced complications. The team has struggled with creativity, scoring only 18 goals in the Premier League this season. Moyes is actively seeking changes to improve the team's performance.
