Ex-Browns Star Sues Over Surgery That Ended NFL Career

David Bell, a former Cleveland Browns wide receiver, is taking legal action against a surgeon and several medical organizations. He claims a botched operation nearly killed him and ended his NFL career before it truly began.

Bell was just 24 when he got hurt during Week 2 of the 2024 season. His hip injury led to a surgery he says he didn't need. The lawsuit says doctors used misleading scans to push him into a core muscle procedure, also known as a sports hernia repair.

The complaint suggests this was part of a bigger pattern. It claims some doctors push unnecessary surgeries on pro athletes to make money.

During the operation, things went badly wrong. The lawsuit says Dr. William Meyers accidentally cut Bell's femoral artery, the main blood vessel in the leg. This caused severe internal bleeding.

The clinic wasn't ready for such a serious problem. Bell had to be rushed to Thomas Jefferson Hospital by ambulance. There, doctors worked fast to fix the artery and save his leg.

Even after emergency care, Bell was left with lasting physical harm. The injury and recovery made it impossible for him to keep playing football.

Before all this, Bell showed promise. The Browns picked him in the third round in 2022. He played in 32 games over three seasons, catching 41 passes for 408 yards and three touchdowns.

His best moment came as a rookie, with 214 yards in a single season. But after the injury and surgery, he couldn't continue. The team moved him to the reserve/retired list in 2025.

Bell is now asking for more than $300 million. The lawsuit covers lost NFL contracts, pain, and other damages. He wants the medical group held responsible.

The Browns are not part of the lawsuit. The doctors and clinics have not responded in court yet.
