Exercise Boosts Movement Skills in Kids with Autism
Research shows that regular physical activity helps children with autism improve their movement abilities. A large review looked at 34 different studies from 12 countries. More than 1,000 kids between ages 3 and 12 took part. The results were clear. Exercise makes a real difference for motor skills.
Scientists measured the effects using a standard scale. They found a strong positive impact. The average improvement score was 0.95. That is considered a large effect in research terms. Both big movements like running and jumping got better. Small movements like writing and buttoning shirts also improved.
The study also asked how much exercise works best. There is a sweet spot. Too little does not help much. Too much can lead to burnout. The optimal dose appears to be moderate sessions several times a week. Each session should last around 45 to 60 minutes. Consistency matters more than intensity.
Different types of activities were tested. Swimming, ball games, and balance training all helped. Structured programs with clear goals worked better than free play alone. Kids who stuck with it for at least 12 weeks saw the biggest gains. Shorter programs still helped but less so.
Parents and teachers should know that movement practice is not just play. It builds brain connections. It supports coordination and confidence. Schools can add short activity breaks. Families can try fun home routines. Every bit of movement counts toward better skills.
