Exploding Secrets on a Pipeline's Doorstep
La Porte, USAFri Sep 20 2024
When a white SUV crashed through a fence at a Walmart parking lot and ignited a pipeline fire earlier this week, little did anyone know that human remains were hidden beneath the smoldering wreckage. The Deer Park Police Department and Harris County Medical Examiner have launched a criminal investigation to uncover the identity of the deceased person, who has not been named yet. As the fire continued to burn, nearby residents were evacuated, and Spencer Highway remains shut down while the investigation is ongoing.
Firefighters and emergency responders rushed to the scene soon after the SUV struck the above-ground pipeline valve, and a local hospital reported treating a few people injured in the incident. Although the fire has burned for days, its impact on the community is far from over. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo expressed concerns that the prolonged fire could lead to long-term effects, including mold growth in homes and mildew on clothing.
Energy Transfer, the company that owns the pipeline, is working diligently to contain the fire by installing infrastructure to isolate the damaged section of the pipeline. While many residents are considering relocating due to the fire's aftermath, Judge Hidalgo emphasized that the situation is not irreversible and that steps can be taken to rectify the damage.
