This: instead of relying only on hospitals and labs to spot disease trends, we could use places like restaurants, stores, and churches as early detectors. These spots, called Points of Interest (POIs), are where people meet and mingle, making them hotspots for catching and spreading illnesses like COVID-19. Researchers in Florida tried out a new method to calculate how crowded these POIs get weekly. They tracked foot traffic at nearly 300, 000 POIs and checked if crowded places matched up with local COVID-19 cases, looking at different time gaps.
The result? 261 POIs were flagged as potential "sentinels, " giving an early heads-up about outbreaks, one to three weeks ahead. Most of these sentinels were food/drink spots, healthcare services, and religious/civic centers. They had a large, steady customer base. This study suggests that by including more diverse and spread-out POIs, we can improve our disease surveillance systems.
