Exploring Thin and Porous: The World of Triazine Materials

Fri Jan 24 2025
Triazine materials, like CTFs and 2D-TPs, are superstars in the world of porous organic compounds. They're made of triazine units, which are tiny but mighty nitrogen-rich fragments. CTFs, or Covalent Triazine Frameworks, have unique shapes and excellent properties, making them super useful for tasks like gas adsorption and energy storage. The catch? They're hard to make in large amounts and with diverse structures because the basic reaction isn't reversible and the conditions are harsh. 2D-TPs, or Two-Dimensional Triazine Polymers, are another hot topic. They're like ultrathin sheets with lots of exposed surfaces and active sites. But making high-quality 2D-TPs in large quantities is still a mystery. Researchers have been trying out different strategies to tackle this challenge. Recent studies have shown that using different synthesis methods, like solution polymerization and microwave-assisted techniques, can produce high-quality CTFs. These methods help uncover new ways to control the preparation of these functional materials. For 2D-TPs, researchers have developed both bottom-up and top-down strategies. Bottom-up methods create these sheets directly, while top-down methods break down bigger crystalline CTFs. Both approaches aim to make these materials in large quantities and understand their unique properties better. These triazine materials have shown great potential in applications like batteries, catalysis, and adsorbents. They perform exceptionally well and have unique structures that make them stand out. However, there are still many challenges to overcome before they can be widely used. Future research will focus on understanding their polymerization mechanisms and improving their practical applications.

questions

If CTFs and 2D-TPs were in a race, which would win and why?
If CTFs could talk, what would they say about their poor reversibility in synthesis?
Is the ultrathin nature of 2D-TPs a result of some unknown cosmic influence?
