Fairfax County saw a drop in crime across several categories in 2025. This includes a 15% decrease in homicides, with all cases solved. Non-fatal shootings and robberies also saw significant reductions, down 37% and 20% respectively. These improvements align with broader trends seen across the region and the country.
However, crime doesn't take a break. Criminals are always watching and adapting to new police strategies. They know about the increased use of public cameras and other crime-fighting tools. This means law enforcement must keep evolving to stay ahead.
Stolen cars and burglaries also saw declines, down 19% and 28% respectively. Shoplifting, which has been on the rise for years, finally saw a decrease of 13%. In Tysons, shoplifting fell even more, by 22%, thanks to a dedicated urban team.
Road safety also improved, with fatal motor vehicle deaths dropping by 57%. While pedestrian deaths rose seasonally, the overall category saw a 20% decrease. The county also saw a 30% reduction in opioid-related deaths, thanks to a team of detectives focused on overdoses.
Arrests for driving while intoxicated rose by about 7%, attributed to increased traffic enforcement. The police department emphasized that their goal is not to generate revenue but to change bad driving behaviors.
With a low vacancy rate, the department has been able to maintain neighborhood policing teams. These teams respond to crime hotspots and monitor trends. Additionally, hundreds of people and businesses have shared access to their cameras with the police, further aiding crime prevention.
The police chief noted that traffic enforcement has a significant impact on reducing violent crimes. When drivers feel they can get away with reckless behavior, they are more likely to carry firearms and engage in disputes.
Regular communication with school resource officers and business checks are also contributing to the crime reduction. However, the chief cautioned that success in 2025 does not guarantee the same results for 2026.
