Deaf and hard-of-hearing college students face unique challenges. One area that's not often talked about is how their faith impacts their drinking habits. Researchers wanted to know if religion plays a role in their decisions about alcohol.
They spoke to 50 students at Gallaudet University. The students shared their experiences and views on alcohol use. The researchers focused on the role of religion in these experiences. They found three main themes: religion often goes unnoticed, it can be a protective factor, and sometimes, it leads to negative experiences.
The study suggests that for some students, their faith might encourage healthier drinking habits. However, it's not a one-size-fits-all situation. Each student's experience is unique.
This study sheds light on an important aspect of college life for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. It's a reminder that faith can play a significant role in their choices and behaviors.
