Faith and Family: How Parents of Children with Disabilities Feel About Their Beliefs
USAFri Mar 13 2026
Parents who raise kids with disabilities in the United States often turn to religion for comfort and guidance. A study surveyed 330 such parents, asking them about their religious habits and how strong they feel their faith is. The results showed that most of these parents reported very high levels of religious activity and a deep sense of belief.
The research also revealed differences among families based on age, income, and the type of disability their child has. For example, parents whose children have visible impairments tended to pray more frequently than those with less obvious conditions.
Another factor that mattered was whether the parents’ church offered a disability ministry. Those who attended churches with such programs felt more supported and reported stronger faith.
The study highlights that both outward practices—like attending services—and inner feelings of spirituality are important when helping families cope with the challenges of raising a child with special needs.
By recognizing how faith shapes parents’ experiences, support groups and professionals can tailor their assistance to meet both the spiritual and practical needs of these families.
