Faith and Healing: How Religion Shapes Trauma Recovery in South Africa

Cape Flats, South AfricaWed Aug 13 2025

In South Africa's Cape Flats, a region steeped in deep-rooted inequalities and a history of apartheid, religion plays a significant role in people's lives. For some women who survived childhood sexual abuse, faith can be a source of comfort. However, it can also complicate their healing journey.

The Double-Edged Sword of Faith

Researchers interviewed 13 women who experienced this trauma. They discovered that while religion can offer support, it can also hinder recovery. This often happens when cultural and religious norms discourage survivors from openly discussing their pain. Additionally, many faith-based groups lack the necessary tools to address trauma effectively.

A Path to Healing

Some women found a healthy way to connect with their faith through specialized care sessions focused on trauma. These sessions allowed them to speak openly about their pain and use their beliefs to gain strength.

The Importance of Holistic Healing

This research highlights the need to consider spiritual beliefs when helping survivors heal. However, it also emphasizes the importance of addressing larger issues of inequality and gender, which can make recovery even more challenging.
