Faith on the Campaign Trail: Harris & Trump's Unusual Approach

In the 2024 presidential race, religion has taken a backseat compared to previous elections. Vice President Kamala Harris recently attended church services in Atlanta and spoke at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. Her running mate, Tim Walz, visited a church in Michigan. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump criticized Harris for skipping an important Catholic charity event, stating it was disrespectful to the Catholic community.
Historically, candidates have highlighted their faith to appeal to religious voters. However, this year, Harris, Trump, and their respective running mates have not emphasized their religious beliefs as much. This contrasts with President Joe Biden, who is known for his strong Catholic faith.
The U. S. has seen a rise in secularism, with more adults identifying as religiously unaffiliated than ever before. This change in the political landscape has made it less advantageous for candidates to stress their religious beliefs. Instead, they focus on policy and personal integrity.
Kamala Harris has a complex religious background, having been raised by a Black Anglican father and an Indian Hindu mother. She is married to a Jewish husband and is a member of a historic Baptist church in San Francisco. Although she rarely talks about her faith publicly, she does mention it occasionally, especially when speaking to Black audiences.
Trump, on the other hand, has a complicated relationship with religion. He was raised Presbyterian but considers himself a nondenominational Christian. His support comes largely from evangelicals who share his political agenda rather than a spiritual connection.
Harris and Trump both have intricate religious journeys that might not resonate as well with voters compared to Biden's straightforward Catholicism. They are navigating a landscape where religion is less of a deciding factor for many voters.
