Fake Blood Prints: How They Can Trick Investigators

Fri May 22 2026
A crime scene can hold a bloody fingerprint that helps identify the culprit. The pattern and the DNA in the blood give strong clues to a judge or jury. But sometimes the print is not real. A latent print may already be there, and later blood can make it look like a fresh mark. This is called a faux bloody fingerprint. Scientists have not studied this enough. They need better ways to tell real from fake. A pilot study looked at different ways blood can leave a stain and the types of skin oils that stay on fingers.
The goal was to see which combinations create a fake blood print. The team used many kinds of blood‑stain patterns and different fingerprints. They checked how clear the fake prints were with a standard grading scale. Most of the time, no fake print appeared. When a fake did form, it happened with fingerprints rich in oil and when the blood moved by flow or swipe. These prints can look very similar to true bloody fingerprints. More research is needed to see if other conditions could also produce fakes.
