Family‑Run Petting Zoo Brings Smiles to the County

Oakley, CA, USAThu May 28 2026
A small idea at a pumpkin patch turned into a traveling petting zoo that now visits schools, parties and community events across East Contra Costa County and beyond. Robert and Katy Kerling started the venture after a neighbor asked them to run a petting zoo at a local pumpkin patch in 2023. Their own pets—rabbits, sheep, ducks and more—were quickly organized into a mobile setup that drew more visitors than they expected. Word spread fast, and the family began taking bookings for birthday parties and special occasions. The business grew from a handful of animals to a fleet that includes three custom trailers and several trucks. Robert works as a pipefitter, Katy is a real‑estate agent, and their sons—Joshua, Joseph and Thomas—handle daily animal care, event logistics, and marketing. Joshua manages schedules and paperwork; Joseph focuses on feeding and health checks; Thomas assists during weekend events.
Beyond the fun, the Kerlings view their zoo as a community service. They partner with local groups like Moose Lodge to organize toy drives and special days for children and veterans. Their goal is to keep the animals out of homes, giving kids a chance to learn about animal care while supporting local charities. The family’s roots in Oakley began with a short emergency job at Valero Benicia, but they stayed after the assignment ended. Now they see their petting zoo as a way to give back, build relationships and keep kids smiling.
