Fashion Designer Hit With Million-Dollar Lawsuit Over Charity Gala

A famous fashion designer is in hot water over a huge unpaid bill. Aurora James, known for creating the "Tax the Rich" dress worn by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, faces a lawsuit claiming she owes over one million dollars. The company that planned her star-studded charity event says they never got paid. The gala happened at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles earlier this year. Big names like Meghan Markle and Kimora Lee Simmons showed up. The event aimed to raise money for Black business owners.

The lawsuit names James, her nonprofit 15 Percent Pledge, and its fiscal sponsor. Court papers say the nonprofit made two deposits toward the one-point-five million dollar cost. Then payments stopped completely in November 2025. The event planners claim James personally directed the project. She allegedly approved extra costs and signed a document admitting the breach. Yet she supposedly knew the organization couldn't cover the bills.

James started the nonprofit in 2020 after George Floyd's murder. The group pushes retailers to dedicate fifteen percent of shelf space to Black-owned brands. Its website calls it a racial equity and economic justice organization. Legal experts point out a striking irony. An organization built on supporting small businesses stands accused of stiffing one. Former prosecutor Dave Aronberg notes that preaching economic fairness requires practicing it too.

This isn't the first time James has faced money troubles. Reports from 2021 show her fashion company had unpaid tax debts. Multiple state tax warrants totaled nearly fifteen thousand dollars. The business also faced claims over unpaid worker benefits. Political observers highlight the contrast between her public activism and these private financial issues. The case continues in New York Supreme Court.
