FCC Leader Slams Trump's Threats to CBS License

Fri Oct 11 2024
The leader of the FCC, Jessica Rosenworcel, has criticized former President Trump for attacking CBS over changes made to a '60 Minutes' interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. She called his threats "serious" and warned that they should not be taken lightly. In a statement, Rosenworcel emphasized the importance of the First Amendment, noting that the FCC cannot revoke licenses based on disagreements or dislikes over content. This isn't the first time Trump has threatened TV networks' licenses during his political career. Rosenworcel highlighted that the license review process is oversight-free for opinions and news selection. CBS, for its part, routinely edits shows for timing and clarity, and there was no intentional falsification of news. An exception would be if there were clear evidence of station management directing employees to fabricate news. Trump's critics believe this is a tactic to shift attention from his refusal to participate in the '60 Minutes' election special. The former president initially agreed to the interview but later backed out, saying he didn't want to be fact-checked. This isn't the first time Trump has threatened TV networks' licenses; previously, he targeted NBC over a report involving his former secretary of state. The FCC, however, remains firm in its stance that licensing should not be used as a political tool. The process is designed to maintain impartiality and uphold the freedom of speech.
