FDA Clears Thousands of Spine Devices Over Two Decades

United StatesMon Nov 02 2026

The FDA cleared 5,977 spine surgery devices between 2000 and 2023. That covers two decades of device authorizations in the United States. It shows how the market has changed over time.

Most of the devices were spinal implants and fixation, with 4,328 units, about 72 percent overall. The share of these implants fell from roughly 79 percent in 2000 to just over 51 percent by 2023. Navigation devices rose from none to 753 units, making up 12.6 percent of all authorizations and reaching 107 in 2023. The decline in implant share reflects a shift toward newer navigation tools.

Almost all clearances used the 510(k) pathway, which accounts for 99.4 percent of the total. Special 510(k) submissions cleared faster than standard ones. Because the 510(k) route is faster, many companies choose it for quick market entry.

Device authorizations more than doubled, rising from 108 in 2000 to 342 in 2023. Researchers used three-year averages and statistical tests like ANOVA and Welch's t-test to spot trends.
