Federal Agents Active in North Carolina: What You Need to Know
Raleigh, N.C., USAWed Nov 19 2025
Federal agents from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) made their presence known in parts of North Carolina, sparking reactions and concerns among residents. Initially, it was reported that these agents would focus their immigration enforcement efforts in Raleigh. However, plans changed quickly, and the agents shifted their operations to Charlotte instead.
Residents in Cary, Durham, and other nearby areas shared photos and videos of the agents near businesses. One notable image showed an individual in handcuffs, escorted by what appeared to be a CBP agent. In North Hills, neighbors captured video of agents in bulletproof vests entering the Pointe at Midtown Apartments around 11 a. m. Witnesses reported seeing agents moving around the buildings and making at least one arrest.
In Durham, a homeowner shared footage from a Ring camera showing agents arresting someone. These incidents raised questions and concerns about the scope and impact of the federal agents' activities.
Raleigh Mayor Janet Cowell addressed the situation, emphasizing the city's commitment to safety and the law. She confirmed that while Raleigh Police Department (RPD) is not involved in immigration enforcement, they are dedicated to protecting residents and following legal procedures. Cowell also clarified that RPD had not participated in any immigration planning activities.
Protests erupted in Raleigh over the weekend, with hundreds of people marching from Moore Square to the State Capitol to voice their opposition to the immigration enforcement actions. The raids in Charlotte had particularly targeted Hispanic-owned businesses, but concerns extended to other communities as well.
Morrisville Councilmember Steve Rao expressed worries about the potential impact on the town's large South Asian population. He highlighted the fear and uncertainty among residents, especially those who are legally in the country on skilled immigration visas. Rao also mentioned concerns about increased fees for visa applications and the need for people to know their rights.
